Have you ever stumbled across something completely unexpected? I mean something so cool, mysterious, and obviously historical that it leaves you completely baffled? Well, that's exactly what happened on the east side of Jackson on East Michigan Avenue.

The Commercial Exchange Building, corner of East Michigan Avenue and South Horton Street has a secret and it ain’t tellin’ nobody.

According to 13 is on Your Side, it’s a secret underground room that was discovered by accident on July 31, 2020 when the owner was cleaning up the area. The room was discovered in one of the ground’s neglected sections: weeds, and grass had pretty much taken over….and the usual litter and debris as well.

While much of the refuse and garbage were being bulldozed, something was unearthed: a secret underground room made of brick, wood, and concrete. Not a hole, but a whole room, like a lost underground workspace. Inside they found old rusted pipes, a hooked chain…and little stalactites, a miniature version of the type you would find in underground caves.

Was this a secret room used by bootleggers? No proof was found…no still, no bottles, nothing. And no bodies or skeletons. Not only that, but they discovered a connected offshoot room.

The weird thing? There was no access from the main Commercial Exchange Building to this little concrete-walled underground room. Or was it a bunker? Too old to be a bomb shelter. Maybe a gangster hideout? One guess was it could’ve been part of a complex for steam kilns in order to dry lumber.

Storage room, meat cooler, who knows? Whatever it was used for, it was well-built.
