Oh No! The Toll Is Becoming More Expensive To Drive From Michigan To Canada

However, before you travel there, you need to know about the toll increase that is going into effect on Sunday.

What Is Happening?

To cross over to Canada, the toll rates have increased due to approval by the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority (SSMBA).

It is going into effect on October 1st. It will also be added with a currency equity adjustment.

Since the Canadian dollar is weaker right now, the Canadian currency toll rate will be raised.

The approval happened at the August 16th meeting, where SSMBA approved the semiannual toll increases.

International Bridge Administration Bridge Manager Peter Petainen says,

"This toll increase will not fully address the projected long-term capital deficit. But the increase is a measured approach toward building the reserve fund necessary to pay for planned capital improvement projects in the next 10 years."

How Much Is The New Toll Increase?

That is the question of the hour!

The first of the scheduled toll increases will make the U.S. currency passenger vehicle toll for people paying with cash or credit go from $4.00 to $4.10 on October 1st.

For commercial drivers, the rate will increase by 25 U.S. cents per axle.

Now for the Canadian side, the rate for passenger cars will rise to $5.50 and the commercial toll will increase by 25 Canadian cents per axle.

EUP News shared that,

"In concert with the toll increases, the SSMBA will make changes to increase the discount available to eligible commuters. Prepaid commuter program participants making up to four crossings per month will see a 10 percent discount. Commuters making five to eight crossings per month will see a 20 percent discount. Those crossing nine or more times per month will realize a 35 percent discount."
