Is Your Family Eligible For Michigan’s $550 Tax Refund Check?
You may have heard that some Michigan families are about to get tax refund checks from the state of Michigan. But is your household eligible? And when will these checks be available?
As we reported in December last year, the state of Michigan announced that eligible Michigan residents would receive Working Families Tax Credit checks in early 2024. These refunds are part of the $1 billion in tax cuts signed into law last year by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
How Much of a Refund Should Michigan Residents Expect?
According to Governor Whitmer's office, eligible households will receive an average of $550.
"By quintupling the Working Families Tax Credit, we’re putting an average of $550 back in the pockets of 700,000 Michigan families ahead of schedule,” said Governor Whitmer. “This directly benefits half the children in Michigan, and moms and dads can use this extra money at tax time to pay the bills, put food on the table, and buy school supplies."
Who is Eligible for a Michigan Working Families Tax Credit?
According to WILX-TV, families' eligibility to receive the checks will be based on 2022 tax returns. The amount of the check issued to each family will be the difference between the 6% tax credit Michiganders received on their tax return and the 30% owed under the new law.
The Michigan Department of Treasury will determine who is eligible to receive refunds, meaning residents will not have to fill out any additional paperwork to qualify.
When Should Michigan Households Begin Receiving Refund Checks?
Michigan is expected to begin sending out checks to eligible residents on February 13. The payments will be sent out on a rolling basis during the following six-week period.
