When the headline pitches 'World's Most Disgusting Contest' how can you not be intrigued, right? Although I'm clearly projecting my opinion, I feel there's a pretty good chance you'll be willing to join me in my disdain for what's about to happen this weekend in Michigan.

What is the World's Most Disgusting Contest?

This Saturday (5/11), contestants will compete to see who can eat the most hotdogs. That's right, it's a hotdog-eating contest. (Blurf!)

Lake Michigan Credit Union (LMCU) Park will host a contest to see who can eat the most hotdogs. LMCU Park is the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps and is located in Comstock Park, just a few miles north of Grand Rapids.

The contest is hosted by Nathan's Famous and Meijer and will take place right after the West Michigan Whitecaps' game. The team is also hosting a Military Appreciation Day event at the game.

Winners Advance to the National Hotdog Eating Contest

According to WOOD-TV, the top male and female winners of this weekend's competition will get to move on and compete in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hotdog eating contest, held each year in Coney Island.

You've probably heard of Joey Chestnut, right? The Indiana native won last year's national championship, nabbing his 16th title. Chestnut holds the world record for eating 76 hotdogs and buns in 10 minutes. (His parents must be beaming with pride.)

Niki Sudo of Florida has taken the women's title nine times. Her record is eating 48.5 dogs and buns in 10 minutes.

Other qualifying events will be held in New York, Connecticut, Cleveland, California, and Washington D.C. Anyone interested in competing should follow this link.

Why Do I Label This a Disgusting Event?

Personally, I find food challenges to be glutenous and irresponsible. With the number of people in the US who face food insecurity regularly, it seems wrong to hold competitions to see who can stuff the most food into their faces.

In Michigan, more than one million people face food insecurity regularly. One out of nine adults and one out of eight children in our state periodically rely on food assistance programs, according to Feeding America.
