One Michigan City is About to Ban Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers
The city of Ann Arbor has laid out a timeline to limit the use of, and eventually ban gas-powered leaf blowers. Is this a preview of things to come in other cities in Michigan?
While the ban may garner some criticism from homeowners and lawncare professionals who've relied on gas-powered blowers for decades, Ann Arbor's city council approved the measure unanimously at the end of last year (2023).
Timeline for Banning Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers in Ann Arbor
Effective immediately, residents of Ann Arbor will be prohibited from using gas-powered leaf blowers from June 1 through September 30. This summertime ban will be in effect through 2027 - only electric blowers are permitted during the summer months from 2024 through 2027.
A total ban on gas-powered blowers will go into effect on January 1, 2028.
Why is Ann Arbor Implementing a Ban on Gas-Powered Blowers?
According to the city's website, Ann Arbor is moving to phase out gas leaf blowers for several reasons.
Health Benefits: Gas leaf blowers emit harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and other pollutants. Exposure to these elements can lead to various health risks.
Fewer Emissions: Electric leaf blowers don't release harmful greenhouse gases.
Noise: Electric leaf blowers are significantly quieter, running at about 60 to 70 decibels, as opposed to gas blowers which typically operate at about 100 decibels.
Cleaner Environment: Gas spills are common when refueling leaf blowers, so the city is looking to eliminate the possibility of gas seeping into the soil and groundwater systems.
