Under the heading, 'Gone but Not Forgotten' a once popular restaurant that went out of business 20 years ago is set to make a comeback in 2025.

Chi-Chi's, a once-popular Mexican restaurant chain, had about 200 locations in the United States, including several in Michigan.

Is Chi-Chi's Getting a Second Chance?

Michael McDermott is the son Marmo McDermott, who founded Chi-Chi's with former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee. The younger Mr. McDermott has reportedly struck a deal with Hormel Foods, the current owner of the Chi-Chi's trademark. Under the agreement, he's been granted the right to use the iconic name on physical restaurants.

McDermott's restaurant experience includes a career with Knoa Grill and Rojo Mexican Grill. He hopes to put a fresh and modern twist on what made Chi-Chi's great in its heyday.

"I still have fond memories of growing up in the CHI-CHI’S™ restaurants that my father built throughout their time, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my own career in the restaurant industry," he said in a release. "We have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today’s consumer – an updated dining experience with the same great taste and Mexican flavor."

Will Chi-Chi's be Returning to Michigan?

Chi-Chi's closed its last locations in 2004. It's possible that Chi-Chi's could be returning to Michigan but details regarding where the newly-branded restaurants will open first have not yet been disclosed.
