Michigan Tattoo Shops Can No Longer Use Numbing Creams
The last time you got a tattoo, was the pain so unbearable that you asked your artist to slap on some numbing cream? If so, you’re not going to like Michigan's new law.
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different when getting a tattoo. Certain areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Some are so unbearable that they require a little help from that wonderful numbing cream. For me, the elbow is one of the most painful places to get a tattoo. It’s absolutely brutal.
Michigan’s New Tattoo Rule Bans Numbing Creams
Well, say goodbye to that little lifesaver. As of September 11, 2025, tattoo shops in Michigan are no longer allowed to use numbing creams or sprays. The new state rule makes it illegal for artists to apply, or even tattoo over skin that already has any kind of topical anesthetic.
The only loophole is if you’ve got a prescription from your doctor. In that case, the artist has to keep a copy of it on file before they even touch you with a needle. Without it, they risk some serious trouble with the state, including losing their license.
Why Michigan Banned Numbing Creams for Tattoos
The state hasn’t given a super clear answer, but the ban likely comes down to safety concerns. Numbing products can mess with the skin and, if overused, can actually be dangerous. Instead of sorting out what’s safe and what’s not, Michigan went all in and banned them unless a doctor says otherwise.

So, if you’ve been thinking about getting some new ink, get ready to feel every single line. The days of taking the easy way out in Michigan are officially over.
