Maybe you're lucky enough to have an automatic start, in which case, you turn that bad boy on and that will certainly help. However, that's definitely using gas you don't need to be, and if you forgot to turn your fan output to max, they hot air might not help as much as you think.

Instead, there's a trick you can use before hand that will keep your windshield from freezing overnight, and all it takes is a potato.
Potato Hack for an Ice-free Windshield
Yes, you read that correctly. A regular, ole potato can save you from freezing your fingers off while scraping your windshield.
According to the Farmer's Almanac, you can take a potato that's been cut in half, and rub the cut half on your windshield. Do this the night before freezing temperatures and it can help prevent ice from forming.
The sugar from the potato creates a barrier over the window and prevents ice from forming, so you’ll come out in the morning and won’t have to scrape! Simply use your wipers and washer fluid to clear the residue away.
