The Unnoticed 1880s Village of Colwood, Tuscola County
Here’s another curious little Michigan town that seems to have little recorded history.
What’s left of Colwood can be found in Tuscola County, Columbia Township, at the intersection of Colwood and E. Dickerson Roads.
What remains, you may wonder? The Colwood Bar and a cool old stone building bank, with the date 1915 at the top. The bar is definitely still operating, but is the bank, or has it been transformed into a residence?

The “town” of Colwood was named after the township (‘Col’) and lumber, the product from which it grew (‘wood’).
Colwood did, at one time, have a post office and a general store, both operated by the same man, Charles Post. The post office opened in February 1884 and closed permanently through May 1905.
There’s not much to see in Colwood except the old bank, but if ya wanna travel eight miles west, there’s the Demorest Cemetery on Trail Road, out in the middle of nowhere.
