Jackson County Prosecutor Kelsey Guernsey announced that a 14-year-old is facing a nine-count felony petition for his alleged role in the May 5, 2026, swatting call that forced Napoleon Community Schools in Napoleon, Michigan, into lockdown and led to school being canceled the following day. A similar incident took place at East Lansing High School on May 1, 2026.

If you're new to the term, "Swatting" is the act of making a fake emergency report, often involving bombs, shootings, or terrorism, to trigger a massive response from police and first responders. In other words, it's calling in a terrifying lie and letting hundreds of parents experience the longest few minutes of their lives.

14-Year-Old Accused in Michigan School Swatting Case

The juvenile is charged with everything from false threats of terrorism and bomb threats to using a computer to commit a crime. Two of the lead charges carry potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison.

Before you question the prosecutor's decision, Guernsey is quick to point out that this swatting threat triggered an enormous emergency response involving 26 police units from six agencies and 18 fire and rescue units from at least seven departments. That's a staggering amount of manpower diverted because someone allegedly thought chaos was a suitable after-school activity.
