Miller’s Ice Cream: Since 1896 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan
When was the last time you had some good old-fashioned Miller's Ice Cream? Anyone who lived near Eaton Rapids going all the way back to 1896, knew about Miller's ice cream and the parlor where you could get a few big scoops.
It was in that year when Dennis Miller began making his own hand-cranked ice cream and delivering his goodies through town on his bicycle. It wasn't long before word of Dennis' ice cream traveled from town to town, and soon Eaton Rapids was being called "The Ice Cream Capital of the World."
Yeah, when I was a kid I used to frequent Miller's Ice Cream Parlor when it was located at the corner of S. Clinton and Mill Street along the Grand River. They always had some kind of odd flavor, especially ones that were based on current events. When man landed on the moon in 1969 they served up the "Apollo 11 Sundae" and the "Sea of Tranquility Float." When Beatlemania hit the United States, Miller's served up Beatle Nut Ice Cream. Oh, yeah...and we can't overlook their Pickle Ice Cream!
Miller's had approximately 30 ice cream parlors throughout Michigan and Indiana, and then Dennis passed away in 1953 at the age of 83. The parlors hung in for another 32 years until they closed in 1985.
The current Miller parlor is located behind the Miller House (635 State Street, Eaton Rapids) in the former ice cream factory. It is now an official Michigan Historical Site where you can find many historical items and information that is being preserved. Miller's 3,500-square-foot home was restored years ago and they continued cranking out ice cream in a parlor open to everyone.
