Just reading the word "mosquito" makes me itch and brings a familiar and unwanted high-pitched buzz into my ear. That buzz might be returning to an ear near you because, according to the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD), while spring may not feel like it, Michigan's summer may hold a very scratchy surge.

The tiny little blood and fun sucking insects that turn a 75 and sunny day in Michigan into a calomine soaked nightmare, were first spotted in larval form on March 17, which is pretty normal. But, and I'm NOT complaining, I haven't seen or felt the sting of a mosquito bite yet.

Rain Doesn't Necessarily Mean a Bumper Crop of Mosquitos in Michigan

In case you forgot, or didn't know how the science of mosquitoes works, here's the scoop: 2024 dumped a ton of rain on Michigan. Lansing, for example, had above-average precipitation for every month except June. This meant more standing water and more places for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

RainDrop.com reports that Lansing received 2.88 inches of rain in April 2025, which is below the 30-year average of 3.41 inches. Sounds like good news, right? Well, maybe.

Warmer Temperatures Are Like Fertilizer for Mosquitoes

Once temperatures remain steadily over 50, which we have yet to enjoy in 2025, that's when we will experience the full impact of 2025's mosquito hatch in Michigan. And that's just the beginning.

Depending on the size of the hatch, the heat, and humidity (both of which extend the life of mosquitoes), will determine just how many times these bloodsuckers hatch. But...even if the area you live in has been dry for years, mosquito eggs that are laid in floodplains can remain dormant for years. That means we are just one heavy rainfall away from water levels reaching those dry eggs, and creating a bumper crop of buzzing bump makers.

So, to answer the question, what will mosquitoes in Michigan be like in the summer of 2025? I think the safe bet is to load up on citronella candles, itch cream, and OFF, because based on the above-average rainfall we've seen already in May, and the amount of standing water holding hatches, we're gonna be swatting and sweating this summer.
