Gas Prices Spike and Michigan Drivers Paying More Than U.S. Average
If filling up your tank lately feels like you accidentally selected the "premium vacation pricing" option, you're not imagining things. Michigan gas prices have shot up faster than the humidity in August. According to AAA data, the statewide average for regular unleaded on March 10, 2026, jumped to $3.55 per gallon, 56 cents higher than a week ago and 72 cents more than we paid last month.

For context, the national average is hovering around $3.45 per gallon, meaning Michigan drivers are currently paying more than the U.S. average for the privilege of commuting to work and Meijer.
Why Gas Prices in Michigan Suddenly Shot Up
AOL reports the biggest culprit is the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has rattled global oil markets and pushed crude oil prices well above $100 per barrel in recent days. When tensions threaten shipping routes or oil production in the Middle East, the global supply chain panics a little.
Since a significant percentage of the world's oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz, even the possibility of disruption sends prices climbing. Michigan is feeling that ripple at the pump.

But the conflict isn't the only factor. Experts speaking with NPR say seasonal changes also play a role. Refineries switch from winter gasoline to the more expensive summer blend, and along with routine refinery maintenance, the supply temporarily tightens.
When Will Michigan Drivers See Relief?
Energy analysts say prices may stabilize, but a dramatic drop anytime soon is unlikely. Even if tensions cool quickly, Michigan prices may only slip back into the low-to-mid $3 range, not the bargain-bin levels we dream about.

So for now, the Michigan gas pump remains what economists politely call "volatile" and what the rest of us call "rude." Maybe ease off the gas pedal... mostly because at $3.55 a gallon, you don't want to think about the final total of a fill-up.
