AOL reports the biggest culprit is the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has rattled global oil markets and pushed crude oil prices well above $100 per barrel in recent days. When tensions threaten shipping routes or oil production in the Middle East, the global supply chain panics a little.

Since a significant percentage of the world's oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz, even the possibility of disruption sends prices climbing. Michigan is feeling that ripple at the pump.

But the conflict isn't the only factor. Experts speaking with NPR say seasonal changes also play a role. Refineries switch from winter gasoline to the more expensive summer blend, and along with routine refinery maintenance, the supply temporarily tightens.
