What’s beneath the Detroit River? What’s lurking down below? Magnet fishing reveals the hidden secrets and treasures that lie on the bottom.

The images in the gallery below were taken by an underwater drone that was attached to a magnet and dredged over the river bed. What they reveal is fascinating. A saw blade, boat anchors, knives, cell phone parts, pliers, fishing bells, spark plugs, flip phone, and other items that just can’t be identified.

Guns, automobiles, and mob-related items have also been found from time to time; and magnet fishing has become extremely popular in the past number of years. There is no bad place to magnet-fish. Off shore, middle of the lake, brook, creek, stream, pond...there are discarded items in every Michigan body of water, no matter how small..

How do these things get there in the first place? The most intriguing answer is because some people have something to hide and they need somewhere to get rid of the evidence. Other things are tossed into the brink by heartbroken and angry lovers – and lots of times people just need to dump their trash somewhere.

Magnet fishing has recovered other items such as bicycles, safes, bombs, grenades, coins, jewelry, tools, and car parts. Many antiques and other valuables have been recovered.

If you think this is something you want to try, you’ll need protective gloves, a bucket, antibacterial gel, and most importantly a neodymium magnet attached to a rope. It sounds like fun but it can be dangerous, depending on what you actually pull up from the bottom. Take a look at the gallery below, then check out other galleries of magnetic fishing in Michigan!
