What is Lansing’s Oldest, Still-Standing House?
That would be the historic Kilbourne-Mead House.

How old is it?
It was built in 1847 in a Greek Revival-style for state Senator Joseph Kilbourne, a man who had a major hand in making Lansing Michigan’s capital.

Where is it?
So far, it’s still at its original location, 1214 Center Street in Old Town.

What do I mean by “so far”?
The house is expected to be moved one block north in an empty lot owned by the owners of the house. The original date was scheduled for June, but it hasn’t been moved yet.

What’s wrong with it?
Lots of termites, water damage, crumbling foundation among other problems a 180-year-old structure may have if neglected long enough.

The owners just couldn’t bring themselves to destroy this historic piece of property, so they are in the process of moving, then restoring it.

According to WILX Channel 10, once finished, the house will have five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, multiple living spaces, and many updates.

Eventually, say the owners, it will become an AirBnB and community center that will host visitors, fundraisers, events, and annual public tours and help preserve Lansing’s history.
