Labor Day, while short, is a direly needed getaway before the chaos of 'back to school' gets fully underway. However, even the most well-planned trips can be sidelined by things far beyond your checklist's control.

Before you end up screaming at the departure board, remember that most flight delays are there to keep the passengers safe—and airborne, two things I very much appreciate when flying. Here's what's more than likely causing your travel nightmare:

• Not Enough Staff - Just like everybody else, airlines are dealing with worker shortages, but thankfully, they aren't asking us to fly the plane or serve drinks...yet
• Too Many People - Everyone from Lansing, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and all points in Michigan is looking to take a vacation at the same time, which makes for longer security lines and more chances for something to go wrong.
• Weather - Look, it's Michigan. Mother Nature looks at a beautiful day here and says, "Well, I can fix that."
• Airport Construction - Just when you knew where everything was, they've gotta go and do a renovation.
