Downtown Lansing Adds Free 15-Minute Parking

Downtown Lansing parking just got a tiny blast of common sense, which is always nice when City Hall and parking meters are involved. According to Downtown Lansing Inc., as of July 1, 2026, the City of Lansing added a free 15-minute parking period option for paid street parking in downtown and Old Town.

The idea is simple: if you're grabbing coffee, picking up food (cashews from the Peanut Shop, anyone?), dropping something off, or making one of those "I'll only be a couple of minutes" trips that somehow decides your financial future, you can use one free 15-minute session per license plate each day through the city's kiosks and parking app. To be clear: this grace period requires you to use the kiosk or app; no kiosk or app, no grace period.

Lansing also shortened paid parking enforcement hours. Instead of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., enforcement now runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On-street parking is still free on weekends.

Drivers can also stay longer on the street. The first two hours stay at the normal rate, but after that, prices climb in two-hour chunks, up to 10 hours. Translation: You can linger downtown, but your wallet may eventually be drained.

How Lansing Compares To Jackson

Downtown Jackson also recently revamped their parking fees. Compared to Jackson’s changes, Lansing’s update feels a little less like a trapdoor under hourly workers. Jackson kept two free on-street hours, but after that, longer stays start costing a good chunk of money, even if drivers move spots. Workers looking at longer shifts may need daily passes, monthly permits, garage permits, or one of the limited free all-day lots that require a compass and snacks for the hike.

So yes, Lansing parking still requires you to pay attention. But for quick downtown stops, that new 15-minute grace period is a small win. Tiny, but we'll take it.
