Let's talk car theft in Michigan—because, apparently, someone decided to make our cars the hottest commodities around. Michigan has seen a whopping 34.8% increase in vehicle thefts between 2020 and 2022. For those keeping track, that's 19,105 cars in 2020, shooting up to 25,753 in 2022. If you've ever felt like your car has a target on its hood, well, you might be onto something.

We're not alone, though. Nationwide, 34 states have seen their car theft rates climb, but Michigan really nailed it, according to the latest study from Lending Tree, with 4 of the top 100 cities in America for car theft (see the gallery below). In fact, one Michigan city saw a staggering 57% jump in stolen rides, which is basically the car thief version of a Black Friday sale.

So, which cars are these thieves after? In 2023, they were really into Hyundai and Kia models. Specifically, the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, and Kia Optima. If you're driving one of these bad boys, you might want to install some extra security. You know, like a moat or a car-sized safe.

It's clear Michigan car thieves are very motivated these days. So, what can you do about it?

Besides walking everywhere (not ideal in Michigan winters), consider investing in anti-theft devices and being extra cautious where you park. While Michigan drivers face enough challenges—talking about you, POTHOLES—protecting your car from becoming a statistic is now another one.
