Palmer Candy, out of Sioux City, Iowa, announced on May 6th that it is recalling all "White Coated Confectionary Items" because of a possible Salmonella contamination. Salmonella can cause serious, and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

On Aug. 6th, the FDA classified the recall as a "Class I" recall, which is their highest urgency of recalls. The FDA describes it as, "A situation which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences, or death.|

"Palmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier that there was a potential for contamination with Salmonella from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated from one of their suppliers."

The recalled products included pretzels, cookies, and "snack mixes."

These products were distributed nationally via Walmart, HyVee, Target, and Dollar General, but some regional distributors included companies in Illinois.

Palmer Candy has since halted production of the products that were affected, and will completely clean its process before considering resuming their production.

What is Salmonella, and How Dangerous Is It?

Commonly found in poultry products, Salmonella can cause an infection called "Salmonellosis," that wreaks havoc on the body's intestines. The bacteria from Salmonella affects both humans and other animals, and could cause diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

The Mayo Clinic says most healthy people can recover within a few days, and will attribute it to food poisoning. However, people with weakened, or compromised immune systems will experience more severe symptoms, including dehydration from diarrhea, and that can be life-threatening if not immediately addressed. In more severe cases, it can also cause a high fever.

If you think you have contracted Salmonellosis, you're encouraged to contact your doctor immediately. And if you think you have come into contact with any of these products from Palmer Candy, report them to the FDA, and seed medical attention.
