Uber Eats just announced a new feature that will make their service more accessible for Michigan SNAP participants.

UberEats announced earlier this year that they have now partnered with Forage, a San Francisco-based payments company, to begin accepting SNAP benefits across the United States (including some chains in Michigan). Now new, or existing SNAP participants can attach their EBT or SNAP card to their account and pay online using those funds.

Some have complained online that it seems unfair that those who are using government benefits should be allowed to use a convenience service, but there are many reasons why this could be a tool to help the most needy and vulnerable participants on the program.

Imagine a single mom who could use her time to focus on her kids instead of trying to juggle a fussy toddler while she tries to find the best deals. Or, maybe an elderly or disabled person who is homebound and unable to shop without great amounts of assistance- they can now use this service to get their rightfully earned benefits with ease.

How can SNAP participants sign up to use UberEats?

It's very simple- you just need an UberEats account to take advantage of the offer. Once you get to the payment screen, you will now have the option to add your SNAP/EBT card as a payment option. As long as you live in the area of a store that is participating, you'll be able to order your groceries online.

Instacart also offers this same service, if you can't find a store on UberEats near you that is participating. However, after your first three deliveries, you will have to pay for the delivery fees, which would still be a big win and help for those who need the help.
