How Do You Get Rid of Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs can be difficult to get rid of, but there are several steps you can take to control and eliminate them.
Clean and declutter: Remove any clutter from your home, especially from around your bed. Wash all bedding, curtains, and clothing in hot water and dry them on the highest dryer setting. Put stuffed animals, shoes, and other items that can't be washed in the dryer and run it on high for 30 minutes or more.
Vacuum: Vacuum your bed and the area around it every day, including windows and molding. Afterward, put the vacuum cleaner bag in a plastic bag and place it in the garbage outdoors right away.
Use bed bug interceptors: Place bed bug interceptors under the legs of your bed and other furniture. These are small plastic cups that trap bed bugs as they try to climb up the legs of your bed or furniture.
Use heat or cold: Bed bugs can be killed with high heat at 115°F (46.11°C) or intense cold at 32°F (0°C). Wash bedding and clothes in hot water for 30 minutes. Then put them in a dryer on the highest heat setting for 30 minutes. Alternately, put affected items in a freezer that is at least 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave them there for four days to make sure all bed bugs are dead.
Use pesticides: If the infestation is severe, you may need to use pesticides. Make sure you use only pesticides that are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and whose labels say they're meant to control bed bugs. It's usually best to hire a professional exterminator who has experience dealing with bed bugs.
