Last “Lawless” Highway in Michigan Finally Receiving a Speed Limit
We all know the rules of the road, and one of the main ones we're expected to follow is the speed limit. Whether it's 15 or 75 MPH, if you keep it at or below that speed, you're likely to have a better time as you travel around the state. But, until this week- there was still one highway in Michigan that was lawless and unregulated, having no speed limit.
Granted- that highway is on an island with no cars, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a technically lawless 8-mile stretch of road. M-185, also known as Lake Shore Drive, is located on Mackinac Island, which we all know is a place with zero cars. And since there were no cars, there was no need for a speed limit- until recently.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill setting a 15 mph limit for bicycles and electric bicycles on M-185. According to the Governor's Office, the speed limit is necessary because newer electric bicycles can reach speeds up to 28 mph, which creates safety risks for other cyclists, horses, and pedestrians.
So, to keep all of these new e-bike riders from barreling over tourists, they've set a speed limit of 15 mph, hoping to keep those speed demons from ruining the quiet and peace of Mackinac Island. While I hate seeing something so special as an unregulated highway, being regulated, it's understandable that the law had to be made.

The law was sponsored by State Senator John Damoose from Harbor Springs, and there's no time frame on when the speed limit signs will show up on the highway. But, here's your official warning: every road in Michigan now has a speed limit. No excuses.
