If you were out driving early this morning in Mid-Michigan, there is a good chance you ran into a mess on I-96, and it probably made your morning stressful.

What Happened on I-96 This Morning

A stretch of the freeway in Livingston County had to be shut down after the overnight storms that absolutely dumped rain across the area. It’s not even just standing water either. Parts of the roadway were straight-up flooded and unsafe to drive through.

How Storms Led to Flooded Roads

This all comes after a pretty active stretch of weather lately. Between heavy rain and already saturated ground, it doesn’t take much for water to start taking over roads, and that is what happened on this stretch.

We’ve already seen similar issues across Mid-Michigan recently, with multiple roads becoming impassable after storms rolled through.

Flooding Becoming a Bigger Issue in Mid-Michigan

Crews ended up shutting down the affected portion of I-96 to keep drivers out of danger, because once water starts pooling on a freeway like that, it can get dangerous fast. Hydroplaning is a risk, along with stalled vehicles.

What Drivers Should Know Moving Forward

If you do see standing water covering the road, you shouldn’t drive through it. Most times, you don’t know how deep it is, and it only takes a small amount of water to cause accidents or even damage to your vehicle.

As of now, it is one of several spots across the region dealing with flooding after the storms, and depending on how quickly the water drains, it could take some time before everything is back to normal.
