In a word: Tastes great. Probably wouldn't know the difference in a blind taste test. Healthier? Not really. Ethical and a meatless option, absolutely. And probably a boost to the bottom line for BK.

So let me start by saying I haven't eaten at a fast food restaurant in a while. Not like fried fast food of the burger variety. I've been watching my diet for a bit. And, admittedly Burger King wasn't always at the top of the list when I did. I live over by Jolly and Dunckel. Not only has the BK closed over by there but when I did go, let's just say they helped me get over going to a fast food joint for burgers quickly.

Burger King has been touting this thing for a while and testing it in various markets. The Impossible Burger and BK's Impossible Whopper have become the IT food of the moment. It's been released on a national level for the fast food chain and the results have been pretty favorable for them.

A meatless burger the saving grace of a national fast food company? What?

Yup. And looking for an excuse to get one in my belly, I decided to test it for purely scientific and blog purposes.

The things I do for you folks.

To keep it clean and fair, I ordered the Impossible Whopper as is (with it's normal toppings). No bells. No whistles. No cheese. No fries. No soda. Just water. If I was gonna cheat on the diet here, I was also going to make sure nothing got in the way of the taste.

There she is. Not gonna lie, a little lacking in the presentation there BK but I did order a basic Whopper. It just looks better on tv and on the menu board when you order it right?

The verdict.

Really, not bad. If you would have served it to me with no mention of it being a meatless burger, I wouldn't have known. It was actually pretty tasty. Maybe a little less on the actual flame grilled taste than it's meat counterpart, but it still had the flame grilled/broiled taste of a regular Whopper.

Consistency was there. Texture. Everything. And seriously, were it not for diet and everything, I would order it on the regular. Well done BK.

Now, the bad news for all you health nuts out there.

This thing is meatless. So that portion of the audience should be happy.

Ethical as in not eating meat. Yes. Healthier? Well, not so much. I don't even think they are advertising it that way. Here's the nutritional breakdown for the Impossible Whopper. NOTE the SODIUM here.

The original Whopper clocks in at 660 calories (more than half of them coming from fat), 40 grams of fat, and 28 grams of protein. The Impossible Whopper comes in at 630 calories (again, half from fat), 34 grams of fat, and 25 grams of protein.

The Impossible Whopper does have significantly lower cholesterol — 10 milligrams compared to 90 milligrams — but has more sodium at 1,240 milligrams compared to 980 milligrams. (Healthline)

You got what you need. I'd say give it a shot. Not gonna make you any skinnier but if you're looking for more meat free options when you hit your favorite burger joint, now you've got this. And I know the competition is falling in line to follow and get some of that growing market share.

Eat up.
