Believe it or not, there are actual rules in the state of Michigan about roadside signs. They can vary from county to county but make sure you know the rules where you live or someone can legally take your sign, even if you paid for it.

Every two years there are a lot of signs that people put in the yards supporting a candidate that is running for an election. I saw a ton of them on my way to work today.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has rules about signs being placed in your yard. Signs must be more than 30 feet from the edge of the roadway and if the highway has curbs, and must be placed more than three feet from the back of the curb.

If you have political signs in your yard, those have to be removed no more than 10 days after the election is over. There are a lot of people breaking that rule in the area where I live.

The good news in Kent County is that signs in your yard are perfectly legal.

According to WOOD, signs that you put in your yard have to be at least 15 feet from the edge of the pavement and 150 feet away from an intersection.via Getty Images

If signs you have up are considered a traffic hazard, road crews can and will collect them if you have not followed the county or the rules of the state.
