Michigan health officials are hoping that all Michiganders will download the new MI Covid Alert app to help slow the spread of the virus.

Michigan had been one of the few states to have the spread of the Coronavirus under control this summer. That all changed toward the end of summer and the return to school. More businesses started to open up fully, and restrictions put in place by Gov Whitmer were ended by other lawmakers. Now we are in the middle of a massive upturn in new cases, where Michigan is setting records for positive cases almost daily.

It is no coincidence that the cases started to spike shortly after Gov Whitmer's orders were ended. It's been more than clear from the beginning that masking up and social distancing are the easiest things we can do every day to slow the spread of the virus. Now that those rules were relaxed, our Coronavirus numbers have started to turn upward again.

Michigan health officials are rolling out a new tool for residents in an effort to slow the spread. The MI Covid Alert App is a tracker that will help you know if you've been exposed to the virus. It also helps to keep others safe if you have the virus, and spread it without knowing before you were tested. You can click the picture below to download the app for free on any mobile device.

The app is obviously centered around contact tracing, but officials are reinforcing that privacy is a top priority. The main purpose of the app as described by Michigan health officials is below.

  • alert you if you may have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus
  • advise you on what to do to protect yourself and others
  • alert other app users that you were in close contact with, if you test positive for coronavirus
