Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, October 1972. After his father left for California (never coming back), little Marshall and his mom moved to Detroit, and for a time, shuttled between Missouri and Michigan.

During his childhood, Marshall made several attempts at mailing letters to his father but they all came back “addressee unknown – return to sender”.

In the Detroit neighborhood where they lived, they were only one of three Caucasian families. Marshall was continuously bullied and beaten by neighborhood kids and schoolmates – the most famous incident being his encounter with D'Angelo Bailey. One bullying incident during recess caused “a cerebral hemorrhage and was in and out of consciousness for five days” according to his mother. He recounted this in his song “Brain Damage” on his 1999 Slim Shady album. Bailey eventually sued Eminem for defamation of character, asking for one million dollars.....and lost.

Marshall started performing as "M&M" with buddy Mike Ruby (“Manix”), and later began phonetically spelling his initials “M&M” as “Eminem”.

The photos below show Eminem's old Detroit neighborhood where most of these incidents happened: the bullying and the beginning of his music career. His home address was 19946 Dresden Street, and became a mecca for fans once it was revealed to be his former house. Eminem visited his old house for an MTV segment (seen below) and used photos of the house for two separate album covers: The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013).

The house was demolished later in 2013.
