A new and very dangerous opioid has returned to Michigan's unregulated drug market, leading to a total of 11 deaths from January to June of 2025.

Fatalities from the opioid span from Ingham County to Livingston, Eaton, Genesee, Oakland, as well as Wayne counties. All were involved in additional substances, like cocaine, in 10 cases.
Timeline of Resurgence
Fentanyl was found in eight different Michigan counties as well. Carfentanil had nearly vanished off the market after causing over 100 deaths between 2016-2017. The number went to about five deaths per year, vanishing entirely from 2021-2022. The drug resurged, causing 14 deaths in 2023.
Risks & Potency
Despite a projected drop of 34% in overall overdose deaths, health officials are still warning the general public of the health risks associated with carfentanil. Carfentinal is extremely potent; even experienced opioid users risk overdose. Reversal may require multiple doses of naloxone.
Lifesaving Tips
Those who are using unregulated drugs, especially the stimulants, should always assume the possibility of carfentanil. Carrying naloxone and knowing overdose signs can help save your life. If you do have to use the off-market stimulants, it is best to use harm-reduction practices, which include using less, going slow, and not using alone. You should always watch your breathing and act fast if you suspect something is wrong.
Carfentanil's return is definitely a serious issue for Michigan, but knowing what it is and being able to act swiftly can help protect its residents.
