It’s almost the end of summer, and as we start packing away the sunblock and trading in shorts for cozy sweaters, there’s some unsettling news on the health front here in Michigan. A new disease is reportedly on the rise, catching the attention of health officials.

Here's what you need to know.

Deadly Disease on the Rise Here in Michigan

West Nile Virus (WNV) is becoming a growing issue in Eaton County, with recent reports showing that three birds—two American Crows and a Red-tailed Hawk—tested positive for the virus.

This follows an earlier case in the county where a horse was also confirmed positive for WNV, highlighting that both wildlife and livestock are being impacted.

On a broader scale, the spread of WNV is concerning across Michigan. As of September 20, 2024, 67 animal cases and 19 human cases have been reported statewide, according to health officials.

This shows the virus is becoming more widespread, posing a risk to both animals and people. Preventive measures, like reducing mosquito exposure, are critical in keeping the virus in check as it continues to spread throughout the state.

Here are some effective ways to stay safe against West Nile Virus (WNV):

  1. Use mosquito repellent: Apply insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin and clothing to keep mosquitoes away.
  2. Wear protective clothing: When outdoors, especially during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks to minimize skin exposure.
  3. Avoid peak mosquito hours: Try to stay indoors during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes that carry WNV are most active.
  4. Install or repair window screens: Make sure doors and windows are screened to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
  5. Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, so empty items like bird baths, flower pots, and gutters where water collects.
