Recall Alert: Popular Brand of Cinnamon Being Recalled in Michigan
Do you have any cinnamon in your spice rack? If you do, you may want to check on it, because many retailers here in the state of Michigan are recalling certain ground cinnamon brands because of elevated possibilities of lead.
Which Cinnamon Brands Are Recalled
The FDA found that multiple brands of popular cinnamon, such as La Frontera, Supreme, Tradition, Marcum and others had contained elevated levels of lead. No illnesses have been reported at this time involving the recall, but the possibility of being exposed to lead can be dangerous for anyone, including the young, elderly, or pregnant.
Health Risks of Lead Exposure
Lead may not always have immediate onset symptoms either. Over time, it can harm the brain, kidneys, or even your nervous system. If you believe that you have any of the affected brands, you should toss them immediately, or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
This hasn't been the first spice contamination this year either. ALB Flavor ground cinnamon was recalled earlier last year, after finding that ground cinnamon contained led in some bags sold at Michigan stores.
Spices are often easy to miss, as the expiration date isn't as quick as other items.
What You Should Do Now
If you know that you have cinnamon inside of your cabinets, you should check them immediately, and see if you can match any of the affected recall products. If you do have them, you should discard of them immediately. If you use your own containers too, you should rinse and wipe them, and not mix them with other spices.
If you also experience any headaches, digestive troubles, or fatigue, it may not be a bad idea to bring that up with your doctor.
