FDA Warning: Recalled ByHeart Formula Still Sold at Major Stores
If you have a baby in the house, this is one of those “stop scrolling and double-check your pantry” moments.
The FDA is warning that some big-name retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Kroger, were still selling ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula even after it was officially recalled in early November.
What products are included in the ByHeart recall
The recall started November 8 and then expanded three days later to include all ByHeart infant formula products, including both cans and single-serve stick packs. In other words, if it says ByHeart on it, it shouldn’t be on a store shelf or in your kitchen right now.
This is a rather serious recall. Federal health officials are investigating a multistate infant botulism outbreak connected to the products.
Why the FDA says this recall is serious
As of December 10, there have been 51 suspected or confirmed cases across 19 states, and every one of those babies was hospitalized. The good news is that no deaths have been reported, but infant botulism is not something to mess around with.
Botulism happens when babies ingest spores from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which can grow in their developing digestive systems and produce a dangerous toxin. Officials say symptoms can include constipation, weak feeding, trouble holding up the head, and difficulty swallowing. Some severe cases include breathing problems.
Infant botulism symptoms parents should watch for
The FDA has also given retailers 15 working days to explain how they’re fixing the problem, and warned that stronger action could follow if they don’t.
If you have any ByHeart formula at home, you should stop using it immediately. If you spot it, say something. If your baby is showing symptoms, call your pediatrician immediately.
