A report from Kaiser Health News shows Sparrow Hospital in Lansingis among 27 hospitals statewide and 769 hospitals nationwide taking a hit on Medicare payments after too many issues like bed sores, blood clots, falls and some infections -- problems that occurred during a hospital visit or stay that are considered avoidable, MLive reports.

Penalized hospitals will lose 1% of Medicare payments for a year.  For some institutions, this could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Other Michigan hospitals on the list include Memorial Healthcare in Owosso, Hurley and McLaren in Flint and University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor.
