Rainbow Rowell Writes ‘Harry Potter’ Fan Fiction Featuring Married Harry and Draco
Rainbow Rowell took on a new, surprising genre of writing: 'Harry Potter' fan fiction.
Yes, the young adult novelist, known best for her honest and quirky YA books ‘Eleanor & Park’ and ‘Fangirl,’ took a break between novels to dabble in the 'Harry Potter' universe. She was first introduced to the fandom while researching fan communities for ‘Fangirl,’ and found herself drawn to it again when she felt “kind of depressed” between writing her own novels.
Rowell is now author to a 30,000-word novella that features a married Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. “It’s Harry and Draco as a couple who have been married for many years,” she told the Bookseller, “and they’re raising Harry’s kids, with Ginny. She has not been vilified.”
The novella was penned in between Rowell writing ‘Fangirl’ and her new novel ‘Landline,’ and it is a close parallel to where she was in her own life at the time. “It’s them dealing with attachment parenting and stepparents and all these middle-aged issues of what it means to be a stepparent,” she explained.
The author has never published the fan fiction online, and has no plans to, claiming she would be “mortified” if she ever met J.K. Rowling afterward. For Rowell and 'Potter' fans dying to get your hands on it, you’ll be happy to know she will read an excerpt during her panel at LeakyCon, a 'Harry Potter' fan convention, later this month.
