After Nathan Triplett failed to garner enough votes to stay on East Lansing's city council and continue to serve as mayor of East Lansing, the city council was faced with selecting a new mayor.

The Lansing State Journal says Meadows was named mayor after a 5-0 council vote, marking his second term as mayor of East Lansing.  He previously served as mayor, from 1997-2005, before becoming a state lawmaker.

Ruth Beier was elected mayor pro-tem by a margin of 5-0 as well.
