The latest count of vehicles involved in Friday morning's deadly pile-up is 193, more than 50 of which were semi trucks.

The pile-up closed both directions of I-94 between Galesburg and Climax, and remained closed until Sunday morning, according to MLive.

A truck driver from Canada was the only fatality, and fewer than 25 people suffered injuries severe enough to require hospitalization, authorities have said.  That is exceptionally surprising, particularly after seeing the cell-phone video that surfaced of the accident as it was happening.

Hazardous material clean-up efforts were hampered by the continued bitter cold temperatures.  In addition to the hazardous materials, initial clean-up and rescue efforts were complicated by a burning semi loaded with 40,000 pounds of fireworks.  The load exploded in a fantastic show that was also caught on tape.
