On this day in 1837, the state of Michigan was the 26th state admitted to the union.  Have you ever heard of Michigan Statehood Day?  (That's today!)


Our admittance to the union may have come sooner, if not for the Toledo War.  It's also known as the Michigan-Ohio War. (Who knew that our rivalry with the state of Ohio pre-dated football?)

Every year the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing celebrates Michigan Statehood Day.  This year's celebration took place over the weekend.  If you missed it, no worries --  Pure Michigan and Awesome Mitten made some other suggestions on where to celebrate.Remember: "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you."
