A new scam to hit the East Lansing area is making phones ring, but it's what shows up on the Caller ID that is particularly concerning.

WLNS-TV reports that area Caller IDs are displaying the East Lansing Police Non-Emergency phone number and, when answered, the target is informed by the caller that they owe money; threatening arrest for people that choose not to pay.

The number in question is (517) 351-4220.  It's a real phone number for the East Lansing Police Department, which is what makes things especially confusing.  But authorities say if you receive a phone call from this number, hang up and call that same number back and select option 6897.
