Alert: New Phone Scam Targeting Taxes
Michigan Treasury Department is warning of a scam, where you could be called and asked to immediately pay income taxes or get in trouble.
It looks like scammers are using a Grand Rapids Area phone number and demanding a payment with a prepaid debit card or wire transfer.
A few reasons why the department says to watch out for this scam;
- The department doesn't demand payment of taxes without first sending a letter
- The Department of Treasury also doesn't threaten you with you with the police
- They also don't ask for your bank codes, credit card #s, or other info over the phone.
If you think you may have gotten a suspicious call like this, please take the number down and call the MI Treasury Department at 517-636-5265 for more help.
